Our tbsp to grams converter is here to help you measure your ingredient's weight in grams from the number of spoons. You can also use it inversely for the conversion of grams to tablespoons.

Tbsp to grams converter

In our tbsp to grams converter, there are three fields:

  • Spoon
    Enter the number of tablespoons (tbsp) in this field. It will convert them into weight in grams (g).

  • Gram
    Enter the weight in grams (g) in this field to convert them into tablespoons (tbsp).

  • Ingredient
    Choose your desired ingredient from the list at the top. You can also select "Custom ingredient" from the list to input the ingredient's density by yourself. Once you've defined your foodstuff, you can hide it and focus on the conversion.

Now, let's take the first example with water. If we want to convert 1 tbsp of it to grams, select water as the ingredient and enter 1 in the spoon field. You'll get 15 grams in the gram field because the density of water is 1 g/cm3.

In another example, let's convert 2 tbsp of butter to grams. Select butter as your ingredient and enter 2 in the spoon field.

Similarly, we can convert grams to tbsp by entering the values in their respective fields.

What is the formula to manually convert tablespoons to grams?

To find how many grams are in a tbsp, we use the following formula:

  • g = tbsp × 15 × density

where:

  • g — Weight in grams;
  • tbsp — Volume in tablespoons; and
  • density — mass per unit volume of the ingredient in grams per centimeter cube (g/cm3).

Similarly, we can convert grams to tablespoons by rewriting the formula as:

  • tbsp = g / (15 × density)

Since we're converting volume to weight and vice versa, knowing the density of the ingredient is crucial.

✅ You can convert 1 tbsp to grams for any ingredient by multiplying 15 with its density.

Let's use this formula and convert 2 tbsp of butter to grams, where the density of butter is 0.959 g/ml. Placing in the values, we get:

  • g = 2 × 15 × 0.959

thus,

  • 2 tablespoons of butter = 29 grams

💡 The average density of milk is 1.03 g/cm3, based on the varying concentrations of its ingredients.

FAQs

How do I convert grams to teaspoons or tablespoons?

To convert grams to teaspoons or tablespoons:

  1. One teaspoon contains about 5 grams of water.

  2. One tablespoon contains about 15 grams of water.

  3. For precise teaspoon measurements, divide the number of grams by 4.929 and the density of the substance.

  4. Multiply that result by 3, or replace the constant with 14.787, and you have the result in tablespoons.

How many grams are in a tbsp?

There are roughly 15 grams in a tbsp. The precise result depends on the substance you measure. For example, 1 tbsp of water is 15 grams, and 1 tbsp of butter is 14.4 grams.

These results follow from:

  • Density of water is 1 g/cm³; and
  • Density of butter is 0.959 g/cm³.

How to convert tablespoon to grams?

For tablespoon to grams conversion, we use the following formula:

  • g = tbsp × 14.787 × density

where:

  • g — Weight in grams;
  • tbsp — Volume in tablespoons; and
  • density — Mass per unit volume of the ingredient.

How many grams is 5 tablespoons of sugar?

Five tablespoons of sugar are approximately 63.38 grams. We obtain this value with the following formula:

  • g = tbsp × 14.787 × density

where:

  • g — Weight in grams;
  • tbsp — Volume in tablespoons; and
  • density — Mass per unit volume of the ingredient in g/ml. For sugar, it is 0.845 g/ml.
