Does a Duo screen repair really cost as much as a new iPhone?

Bar chart comparing iPhone screen repair costs from 2017 to 2026.
The iPhone Duo sets a new record for screen repair costs at 50% of its launch price
Apple published its repair prices on October 14, estimating the replacement of the Duo’s inner screen at $999. The cost of the new screen is half of the launch price.
Even though Apple increased the prices of some of its older models on September 9, this replacement is still more expensive than a new iPhone 17e ($699), iPhone 16 ($829), and iPhone 17 ($929). It’s just $100 short of the price of an iPhone Air ($1,099) and $200 short of the iPhone 18 Pro ($1,199).
The repair of the outer screen—measuring 5.4 inches—is $379, which is the same as a regular screen repair on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

How earlier iPhones compare

The iPhone 17 held the record before the launch of the Duo. Its screen repair cost $329, or 41.2% of its SIM-free launch price ($799). The iPhone 8 comes last: its screen replacement costs $149, or 21.3% of its $699 launch price.
The Duo has now placed itself 10.3 percentage points above the iPhone 17.
In general, the high share can come from a lower launch price or a pricier repair. The screen replacement on the iPhone SE, for example, only costs $129, yet it equals 30% to 32% of the launch price.

Key facts

  • Shares rose from 21% for 2017 models to about 35–37% for models launched in the years 2021–2024.

  • For the budget iPhones (16e and 17e), the repair price is around 38.2% of the launch price—$229 of $599.

How many hours of work are needed to replace a screen

Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employees in the private sector earned on average $37.81 per hour. At this wage, one needs to work 26.4 hours, or 3.3 workdays, to pay for the screen repair.
For comparison, a screen fix on the iPhone SE—which is the cheapest—equals 3.4 hours of work. Before the Duo, the most expensive screen repair was $379, for the Pro Max models from the iPhone 14 series onwards. They cost as much as 10 hours of work—the repair of the Duo’s foldable screen costs 2.6 times as much.

Does AppleCare+ change this?

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the Duo costs $19.99 a month, $199.99 a year, or $399 upfront. With the package, Apple charges $99 to fix the Duo’s foldable display and $29 for the outer screen.

Methodology

Repair prices come from Apple Support, checked Oct. 7, 2026; the Duo’s prices were added Oct. 14. Launch prices come from the Apple Newsroom and archived Apple Store pages. The wage comes from BLS for September 2026 (preliminary).
We compared today’s repair prices with original launch prices, both in nominal dollars, not adjusted for inflation. Apple lists repair prices only for models it still services, so the comparison starts with the iPhone 8. Older models aren’t included, and neither are the iPhone X and XS, which Apple doesn’t list separately. We used base-storage launch prices and SIM-free prices for the iPhone 12, 12 mini and iPhone 17.
