How to calculate what size gas BBQ do I need?

That's one tasty way to practice your math! To calculate the desired grill area, we're going to use the equation taken from our BBQ catering calculator:

  • Imperial version: Grill size = People × 72 in²
  • Metric version: Grill size = People × 464.5 cm²

How much BBQ per person do I need?

We usually recommend buying at least 0.5 pound/8 ounces (0.23 kg) of meat per person. 🥩

It's so easy! You'll only need two steps:

  1. Take a look at the equation:

    Grill size = People × 72 in²

  2. Input your desired number of people:

    Grill size = 10 × 72 in²

    Grill size = 720 in²

  3. Yay! Your grill for a party of 10 should be at least 720 square inches! 🍾

What size barbecue do I need for a party of 20?

Let's get it done! Here's the equation you'll need:

Grill size = People × 72 in²

Grill size = 20 × 72 in²

Grill size = 1440 in²

Now you know! The BBQ you need to host a party for 20 people should be around 1440 square inches.

We usually need 72 square inches (464.5 cm²) of grilling space for a single adult person.

With that information in mind, let's calculate what grill area is perfect for a party of 100:
