Our state tax calculator (income tax calculator by state) helps you to estimate the state tax on your income and see how state tax brackets are applied. With this tool, you can calculate state tax wherever you live in the US and check the applicable state tax brackets for 2023 or 2024.

In this article, you can not only check how the present state income tax calculator works, but you can also learn a few interesting things, such as:

• What is state income tax?
• What states have no income tax?
• What are the income tax rates by state?

If you would like to learn more about tax brackets applied by the Federal government, check our tax bracket calculator or the income tax calculator.

## What is state income tax?

State income tax is a direct tax collected by U.S. states on income materialized in a given state. In other words, state income tax is a percentage of the income you pay to the state authority based on your earnings and applicable tax brackets.

While state income tax typically absorbs a smaller portion of your income relative to the federal income tax, it can still considerably augment your final tax obligation.

## How does state income tax work?

In general, there are two different methods for determining state income tax based on the state where you live. Besides, some states don't levy state income tax at all.

1. Flat tax rates:

In this case, the tax authority determines the tax with a fixed rate; that is, the income tax percentage is constant regardless of your income. For example, if you live in Colorado, the state imposed a 4.5% tax rate on your taxable income declared in 2011, no matter how much you earned. If your taxable income is $100,000, your state income tax is$4,500. And if your income is $1 million, your tax obligation is still 4.5% or$45,000.

Only ten states apply a flat tax rate on incomes. These include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Utah.

2. Progressive tax or graduated tax rates:

### How to determine state income tax?

1. Find out your annual taxable income.
2. Adjust it by any applicable deduction and exemptions (a certain amount by which the taxable income is reduced).
3. Apply the relevant tax brackets with the corresponding state income tax rates.
4. Sum up the income taxes determined in each state's income tax brackets.

## Disclaimer

You should consider the state tax calculator as a model for financial approximation. All payment figures, balances, and interest figures are estimates based on the data you provided in the specifications that are, despite our best effort, not exhaustive. In addition, the calculator potentially omits information relevant to determining personal state income taxes.

For these reasons, we created the calculator for instructional purposes only. Still, if you experience a relevant drawback or encounter any inaccuracy, we are always pleased to receive useful feedback and advice.
