What is state income tax?

State income tax is a direct tax collected by U.S. states on income materialized in a given state. In other words, state income tax is a percentage of the income you pay to the state authority based on your earnings and applicable tax brackets.

While state income tax typically absorbs a smaller portion of your income relative to the federal income tax, it can still considerably augment your final tax obligation.

How does state income tax work?

In general, there are two different methods for determining state income tax based on the state where you live. Besides, some states don't levy state income tax at all.

  1. Flat tax rates:

In this case, the tax authority determines the tax with a fixed rate; that is, the income tax percentage is constant regardless of your income. For example, if you live in Colorado, the state imposed a 4.5% tax rate on your taxable income declared in 2011, no matter how much you earned. If your taxable income is $100,000, your state income tax is $4,500. And if your income is $1 million, your tax obligation is still 4.5% or $45,000.

Only ten states apply a flat tax rate on incomes. These include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Utah.

  2. Progressive tax or graduated tax rates:

This approach applies multiple tax rates associated with different ranges of income or tax brackets. That means people with higher taxable incomes pay a higher portion of income tax from their income. For example, Mississippi applies two tax rates on income declared in 2022. You must pay 4% on taxable income between $5,000 and $10,000, but if your taxable income exceeds $10,000, you must already pay a 5% rate on the part exceeding this threshold.

  3. States without income tax:

There are eight states without income tax levied. These are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

How can I use the state income tax calculator?

To run our state tax calculator, you must simply set the following parameters.

  1. Taxable income — Write here the annual income subject to state income tax — you may apply our annual income calculator at this point.

  2. Year of income — Choose the year of your income.

  3. Where do you live? — Select the state in which your tax obligation occurs.

  4. What is your filing status? — Choose between single filer and married filer.
