The 20-54 age group drives the most, with 15,000 miles (∼24,000 km) per year, followed by the 55-64-year-olds (almost 12,000 miles, or ∼19,000 km). What is the average miles driven per year by state?

Your average distance driven also depends on where you live — drivers' habits, topography, and road availability vary significantly by state. Wyoming is at the top of the ranking, with over 21,000 miles, while the District of Columbia is at the bottom (~6,000 miles). Take a look at the table below to discover the numbers for all states:

On average, how many miles are driven per year in other countries? As it turns out, Americans don't drive that much. In fact, compared to the average miles driven per year by state, some countries drive more than most US states. In the European Union, the Dutch drive the most, with roughly 18,500 miles per year (30,000 km), followed by Spain (~18,000 mi, or 29,000 km) and Denmark (~17,000 mi, or 27,000 km). In Australia, the average distance traveled per vehicle is approximately 7,500 miles (~12,000 km). The Survey of Motor Vehicle Use, provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, specifies that the average for light vehicles (passenger cars) is even lower than the average for all vehicle types.

The UK registered similar figures in 2025, with an average of 7,000 miles (~11,000 km) driven per car. The country continues to register a drop in yearly car mileage, both in the public and private sectors. (NimbleFins).

The steps to calculate our yearly mileage are pretty simple. Take a look at this guided example:

1. Estimate how much you drive in a given time period. Let's assume that you drive around 990 miles per month.

2. Establish how many periods there are in a year. In this case, there are 12 months in a year. This number will be your multiplier.

   You can perform this calculation for any period. For example, if you wanted to estimate your yearly mileage based on the amount you drive in two weeks, your multiplier will be roughly 24, rather than 12.

3. Multiply the number of miles you drive in the chosen period by the multiplier you determined in step 2.

   12 × 990 mi = 11,880 mi

4. And there you have it — 990 mi per month is equivalent to 11,880 mi per year.

  Do you remember the form you had to fill out the last time you bought insurance? Insurers always ask for the average miles per year on the car to assess your "risk" of having an accident, which they would have to cover. The more you drive, the more costly your insurance will be.
