## How to calculate the days for a day countdown

To calculate the days until a specific date, you only have to **subtract the starting date from the final date**. The operations seem straightforward, but it hides a couple of issues!

To subtract two dates:

- Start by counting the number of valid days in the first and last month of the day countdown. In the first month, count the days from the day after the starting date to the month's final day. In the final month, count all the days from the first one to the desired date.
- Now, check if there are "full" years between the two dates. If yes (e.g., if the starting month is

## An example of day countdown calculations.

Say that you want to find the **number of days between the beginning of the school year and the end of it**: this is your countdown to the holidays! School starts on the 15^{th} September and ends on the 20^{th} June of next year. We want to start the countdown on the first day of school, so we'll start counting from the 14^{th}.

Follow these steps:

- Count the days in September: the month has 30 days, so we subtract 15 (the day after the starting date of our day countdown) from 30: $30-15 = 15$.
- For June of next year, simply consider the day number: $20$.
- Assume that the year is
**, not leap**. - How many months are in between September and June? Well, a lot of them. Follow the mnemonics and sum $\rm O+N+D+J+F+M+A+M$: $31+30+31+31+28+31+30+31 = 243$.
- Now sum all these contributions: $15+20+243 = 278$. Start from this number, and every morning decrease by one: soon it will be time to prepare for the holidays!
