How to calculate the days for a day countdown
To calculate the days until a specific date, you only have to subtract the starting date from the final date. The operations seem straightforward, but it hides a couple of issues!
To subtract two dates:
- Start by counting the number of valid days in the first and last month of the day countdown. In the first month, count the days from the day after the starting date to the month's final day. In the final month, count all the days from the first one to the desired date.
- Now, check if there are "full" years between the two dates. If yes (e.g., if the starting month is before the final month), count the number of full years and add to the day countdown:
- days for all the leap years;
- days for all other years.
- You are left with several months. To consider them in your calculations for the day countdown, remember the mnemonics thirty days hath September.....
- Sum all the contributions, and you are done: this is the total number of days in the countdown until the date of your choice.

- How many months are in between September and June? Well, a lot of them. Follow the mnemonics and sum : .
