Our age in hour calculator is straightforward to use; however, if you are curious and you want to learn more, keep reading this article. Here you will find out:

  • What is an hour;
  • Why do we have 2424 hours in a day?
  • How to find your age in hours.

What is an hour?

An hour is a unit of time corresponding to 124th\tfrac{1}{24^{\text{th}}} of a day. The current definition of the hour, the widely accepted one, uses the international system of units measurement unit of time, the second:

1 h=3, ⁣600 s1\ \text {h}=3,\!600\ \text{s}

We don't want to change the second (it's well defined in terms of microscopic quantities): it's the SI units defined with the highest accuracy.

However, the two-fold definition of the hour, coming both from below (from the second) and from above (from the day), is conflicting. The duration of a day is not constant since the Earth's rotation is imperceptibly slowing down.

Now and then, metrologists make one hour last 36013601 seconds and fix the discrepancy!

History of an hour

The hour is an arbitrary unit of time, much like the minute, the second, and the week: we can't base these units on natural processes and cycles (something we can do for the day, the month, and the year).

With the development of civilization, the necessity of marking times shorter than a day became urgent. Ancient civilizations (Babylonians and Egyptians) first developed the hours to handle agriculture, trade, and other mundane tasks better.

Egyptians counted in base 1010, as we do. However, there were instances where they used duodecimal units, that is, base 1212.

With the help of the first sundials, Egyptians managed to begin the human tradition of timekeeping, and they divided the day and the night into 1010 hours each.

2020 hours?? Oh no. But don't worry, there's a catch: Egyptians added two extra hours at the beginning and end of each period, finally reaching the familiar total of 2424 hours.

🙋 How do you use a sundial at night? Well, you don't! To keep track of time during the night, Egyptians used the stars, dividing the sky into constellations that helped them understand what time of the night they were in.

You can easily find a problem with this system: the duration of an hour is not fixed: during the boreal summer, the sun is up for more time than in the winter, and the daylight hours are consequently longer.

We fixed this issue with the introduction of mechanical clocks, which used other physical phenomena to measure a second. From pendulums to quartz, and finally, to atomic clocks, we got better at it!

Now that you know what an hour is, and everything else about it, it's time to learn how to count hours!

How to find your age in hours

Have you ever asked yourself how many hours you spent on Earth? Here you will learn how to calculate your age in hours: it's not complicated at all!

Since there are 2424 hours in a day (and this will not change for a long time), we can simply multiply the number of days elapsed from the initial date to the final one. However, the calculations for that number are a bit more complicated, and you need to count precisely the days in the first and final years and the eventual leap year every now and then!

FAQ

How do you calculate your age in hours?

To calculate your age in hours, follow the next few steps:

  1. Calculate the number of days passed between your date of birth and today.
    • You can do this by converting the date into the Julian day number and subtracting the results.
  2. Multiply the number of days by 24, the number of hours in a day.
  3. To be even more accurate, count the number of hours in the first and last days, and correct the result.

Why are there 60 minutes in an hour?

The division of an hour into 60 minutes is due to the ancient Babylonian numerical system, which used the base 60. In parallel to angles, ancient scientists divided the hours into 60 minutes of 60 seconds.

This is why there are 3,600 seconds in an hour!

How old am I in hours if my date of birth is the 01/01/2000?

Assuming that today is the 4th of July 2022, if you were born on the 1st of January 2000, you spent 197,280 hours on this planet. This number comes from the number of days between the two dates:
07/04/2022 - 01/01/2000 = 8,220 days
Multiply this result by 24 to find your age in hours:
8,220 × 24 =197,280 hours
Walking at a normal pace, all this time wouldn't be enough to cover all of Earth's equatorial circumference: keep walking!

How many hours are in a year?

In a year there are 8,760 hours (8784 if it's a leap year).

Since there are 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year, simply multiply these two numbers together to find how many hours are in a year:
24 × 365 = 8,760,

If you are 26 years old, then you are approximately 230,000 hours old!
