HEX to RGB Converter

Omni's HEX to RGB converter not only can quickly convert HEX color to RGB (and the other way round!) but can also teach you the principles behind each color system, as well as the primary mathematical method of converting HEX color to RGB by hand. Importantly, the HEX to RGB color converter can understand HEX shorthand notation!

What is HEX and RGB color coding?

RGB is one of several color models that enable electronic systems, such as TVs or laptop screens, to display colorful images. RGB uses three primary colors — red, green, and blue — and adds together to create all the different colors we can see on a screen. In fact, these primary colors are encoded in the model's name: Red, Green, Blue.

To write down an RGB color, we give three numbers, integers between 0 and 255, which represent the intensity of, respectively, red, green, and blue in the target color. The primary examples are the pure colors:

  • (255, 0, 0), which is pure red;
  • (0, 255, 0), which is pure green; and
  • (0, 0, 255), which is pure blue.

By decreasing the intensity, we obtain darker colors; for example, (0, 0, 128) is a dark blue (navy). The extreme case is the absence of any light (0, 0, 0), which corresponds to black. On the other end of the spectrum is (255, 255, 255), which is white — we achieve it by using the full intensity of all primitive colors.

HEX is just a way of writing down RGB colors in a slightly different way:

  • Instead of three decimal numbers, we write hexadecimal numbers; and
  • Instead of separating them with commas, we concatenate them in a single string, attaching # at the beginning.

How do I convert HEX to RGB?

If you need to convert a HEX color to RGB by hand, follow these steps:

  1. Divide the HEX code, which consists of six symbols, into three groups of two symbols.
  2. Since the structure of HEX is #RRGGBB, you obtained the red component, green component, and blue component.
  3. Each pair of symbols is a hexadecimal number ranging from 00 to FF.
  4. Convert it into a decimal number (0-255).
  5. Write these numbers, still in the red-green-blue order. Separate by commas.
  6. Congrats, you have just performed a successful HEX to RGB conversion!

💡 As you can see, in order to efficiently convert HEX to RGB, you must know how to convert between hexadecimal and decimal numbers. We invite you to check Omni's decimal to hexadecimal converter if you would like to deepen your knowledge in this area.

Example of converting HEX to RGB

Let's go through an example of converting HEX to RGB together.

Suppose you know the HEX value of #4CAF50. How do you convert this HEX color to RGB?

We follow the steps from the instructions above.

  1. Partitioning 4CAF50 into three segments yields 4C, AF, 50.
  2. Recomputing into decimal integers:
    • Red segment: 4C = 76;
    • Green segment: AF = 175; and
    • Red segment: 50 = 80.
  3. Writing as RGB: (76, 175, 80).
  4. That's it! We have successfully converted the HEX color to RGB!

How to use Omni's HEX to RGB color converter

To efficiently use our HEX to RGB color converter, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure the converter is set to work in the desired direction: HEX to RGB.
  2. Enter the HEX code of your color, omitting the # sign.
  3. Read the RGB value of your color.
  4. Note that the HEX shorthand notation is supported, provided that you tick the box in the calculator.

What is HEX shorthand notation?

HEX shorthand notation is a compact way to write some colors in the HEX format. It concerns colors whose all three components are pairs of identical hex digits (like 00 or FF). In such a case, instead of #RRGGBB, we just write #RGB.

For instance, #F00 stands for #FF0000 (pure red) and #FFF for #FFFFFF (white).

FAQs

What is #000 as a HEX color?

HEX code #000 is absolute black, equivalent to the complete absence of any light. Converting this HEX to RGB, we would get (0, 0, 0). Note that in the proper HEX code as #000000. It is, however, a widely adopted convention to shorten it to #000. Analogously, white is shortened from #FFFFFF to #FFF.

What is the ugliest HEX color?

In an unofficial competition, the HEX color #4A412A has been crowned the least attractive color. It is a dark grayish olive and evokes images of dirt and death. In some countries, tobacco and cigarette packaging has to use this color to discourage people from smoking.

What is the difference between HEX and RGB?

HEX and RGB are just two different ways of encoding colors in the additive color system, where the primitive colors are red, green, and blue. While RGB uses three comma-separated integers in the decimal system to describe the intensity of each primitive ingredient, HEX rewrites them into hexadecimal and presents them as a single string of symbols, preceded by the # symbol.
