To obtain a solution, we have to add some solute to a solvent, and the mass by volume percent, or concentration, is the solute content of that solution. Solvents are usually liquid, so we can dissolve substances in them, while solutes can be virtually anything as long as they dissolve and spread evenly in a solvent.

The percent solution formula is relatively straightforward! All you need to do is follow a few steps:

1. Determine the weight (mass) of your solute. Let's take 7.8 g of sugar.

2. Dissolve the solute in your solvent and determine the overall volume of your solution. Let's assume we dissolved the sugar in some water and ended up with 62 ml of a sugar and water solution.

3. Divide the mass by the volume and multiply by 100:

mass to volume percentage = mass of solute / volume of solution) × 100

mass to volume percentage = (7.8 / 62) × 100 = 12.58%
