Mass Percent Calculator
The mass percent calculator will help you determine the percentage ratio between the mass of a component in a substance and the total mass of the substance.
You might be interested in knowing a slight but definite difference between mass percent and percent composition. Although they might be confused with each other, both are different yet important concepts in chemistry. And our tool allows you to calculate both.

Mass percent calculator
Our mass percent calculator is a handy tool that helps you calculate the ratio of the mass of a component in a substance to the total mass of the substance. We represent it using percentages %
.
The mass percent calculator requires you to input the mass of solute and solvent of the solution if you have these values in grams. Alternatively, you can enter the mass of the component in the mixture and the total mass of the mixture. If you want to convert between mass and moles, then please refer to our grams to moles calculator.
As a result, our calculator gives you the mass percentage of your solute in a solution, or chemical component in a compound, depending on which mass percent formula you are using.
You also have the option to calculate the percent composition of a mixture. You may enter the number of atoms of the element present in a mixture and our tool will give you the percent composition as a percentage of each element you selected.
💡 Also, it may be good to remember the mass percentage of a solution is a property that is independent of temperature.
Would you like to take a look at the percent Composition Calculator? It is a simple tool to evaluate the percentage of each element by weight (or mass) in a compound from its chemical formula.
What is mass percent? Mass percent and percent composition
Now that you know how to find the mass percent of a solution with our calculator, it's time to learn about the mass percent definition:
The mass percentage represents the concentration of a component of a mixture or compound. For solutions, the mass percent represents the ratio of solute to the total solution as a percentage.
Might we suggest our concentration calculator? It helps you convert the molarity into percentage concentration (or vice versa) with a known molar mass of the dissolved substance and the density of the solution.
The mass percent and percent composition are two distinct concepts that are usually confused, as they both represent the percentages of components. The main difference between mass percent and percent composition is:
The mass percent gives the percentage ratio of the mass of a component in a mixture and the total mass of the substance; and
The percent composition represents the above percentages but as the mass of each element in the mixture.
We have a mixing ratio calculator. A simple tool that allows you to compute the amounts and percentages of substances needed to create a given mixture of your choice.
How to find mass percent? Mass percent formula
The mass percent formula exists in two variations: the first to determine the amount of a component in a substance, and the second to determine the percentage of a solute in a solution.

Mass percent of a compound
mass percent = (mass of component / total mass of compound) × 100

Mass percent of a solute in a solution
mass percent = (mass of solute / mass of solution) × 100

Total solution mass
mass of solution = mass of solute + mass of solvent

Solute or solvent
You can alter the formula for the total solution to calculate the amount of solvent or solute:
mass of solvent = mass of solution mass of solute
mass of solute = mass of solution mass of solvent
We measure mass in grams. Still, you are free to use other measurement units as long as you use the same unit for both variables in the equation.
How to calculate mass percent of a compound
The mass percent calculator accommodates all the different situations where the mass percentage can be found, based on mass percent equations:

The mass percentage of solute in a solution.

The mass percentage of a component of a compound or mixture.
It also has the added benefit of calculating percent composition for your convenience
You need the formula for the mass percentage for a solute in a solution when you are studying the solution and its components. In other words, you want to find the amount of solute. In this case, you need to know:
The amount of solute in grams; and
The amount of solvent in grams.
As the result, you will obtain the mass percentage of solute in the solution, expressed as %.
🔎 Advanced mode
In case you do not have the mass of a solvent, you need not worry. All you have to do is click on the advanced mode button found at the bottom of the calculator and input the mass of the solution directly.
It would be best to use the second mass percent equation to calculate the mass percent of a component in a mixture. Now you need to provide:
 The mass of component; and
 The total mass of compound.
Which gives you the mass percentage of the component in the compound, again, expressed as %.
The third option is to determine the percent composition of a mixture.
You need to input:
The number of atoms of each element in a mixture select the relevant atom from the options given. For instance, for H_{2}O, you select H and input 2, then choose O and input 1. The result would be 11.2% and 88.8%, respectively.
Note, that the individual percentages sum up to 100%.

You may input values for a mixture with up to 6 elements in it.

As a result, you obtain the percent composition as a percentage for each element of the mixture.
For example, the query is:
"How do you find the mass percent of the solute in a solution of hydrochloric acid and water, where the amount of hydrochloric acid is 43 grams, and water is 200 grams?"
In other words, the amount of solute is 43 g, and the solvent is 200 g.
First, calculate the total mass of the solution, 243 g. Then find the mass percentage by dividing solute mass by the total mass and multiplying by 100. Eventually, you obtain the result of 17.695 %.
FAQ
What is the difference between mass percent and percentage composition?
Mass percent and percentage compositions are confused with each other but are slightly different:

Mass percent is ratio of component mass to compound mass.

In contrast, percentage composition is the amount of every element in a mixture expressed in percentages.

Mass percent is a simple percentage of a component.

Percent composition gives multiple values for each element in a mixture.

For example, to calculate the mass percent of
NaCl
in water, divide the mass of salt by water and multiply by 100. The percent composition of salt is 39.3% Sodium and 60.7% Chlorine.
What is the mass percentage of 8 g of NaCl in 42 g of water?
The mass percentage of 8 g of NaCl dissolved in 42 g of water is 16%. To calculate this yourself, follow the steps below:
Determine the mass of solute, 8 g of NaCl.
Determine the mass of solvent, 42 g of water.
Determine the total mass of the solution by adding the masses of solute and solvent, 50 g.
 Divide the mass of solute by solution, 8 / 50 = 0.16.
 Multiply the ratio by 100, 0.16 × 100 = 16%.
How do I calculate mass percent of a component of a compound?
The mass percent of a component of a compound is the percentage ratio of the mass of the component by the total mass of the compound. The formula is:
mass percent = (mass of component / total mass of compound) × 100
What is the mass of water required to make a solution with 5.6 g of CH₃COOH and a mass percentage of 9.8%?
The mass of water required to make a solution with 5.6 g of CH_{3}COOH and the mass percentage of 9.8% is 51.54 g. To find it:

Use the formula for mass percent of solute in a solvent:
mass percent = (mass of solute / mass of solution) × 100

Rearrange it to calculate the mass of the solution:
mass of solution = (mass of solute / mass percent) × 100

Subtract the mass of solute from the mass of solution:
mass of solvent = mass of solution mass of solute
.
