How to calculate AP® Lang score

To find your AP® Lang score, you need to count your points for each section of the exam: multiple-choice questions and free-response questions. Then you need to use the following formula for the composite score:

CS= MCQ +(FRQ1+FRQ2+FRQ3)×5518\begin{split} \mathrm{CS} =\ & \mathrm{MCQ} \ + \\ &(\mathrm{FRQ_1} + \mathrm{FRQ_2} + \mathrm{FRQ_3}) \times \frac{55}{18} \end{split}

where:

  • MCQ\mathrm{MCQ} — Number of points for the multiple-choice questions between 0 and 45;
  • FRQ1\mathrm{FRQ_1}, FRQ2\mathrm{FRQ_2}, FRQ3\mathrm{FRQ_3} — Number of points for the free-response questions in each essay section between 0 and 6; and
  • CS\mathrm{CS} — Composite score between 0 and 100. Our AP® Lang and Comp score calculator ensures the score is within this range.

Then, you need to convert the composite score to the actual AP® score. The conversion may vary year to year, depending on the exam difficulty, and is set by the College Board. In the tool, we use the following AP® Lang score breakdown table.
