What is body frame size?

Body frame size is often used as the informal definition of body composition that adjusts for skeletal mass. Since a lot of bodyweight prescriptions such as body mass index (BMI) do not account for body fat levels, body frame size calculation can be a valuable determinant of the physique. Indeed, studies show that body frame size is associated with body fat and fat-free mass.

Your body frame size index can be small, medium, or large. Although note that the index is likely not associated with the density or the strength of your bones. Keep reading to learn how to measure your body frame size!

How do I measure my body frame size?

To calculate the body frame size, first, you should measure the circumference of your wrist and your height. The utilization of wrist size in determining body frame is common since wrists are primarily free from body fat and muscle. To measure your wrist circumference:

  1. Grab a flexible but non-stretchable measuring tape preferably 0.7 cm or 0.3 inches wide.
  2. Wrap the measuring tape around the circumference of your wrist, just above the knobby bone, until it overlaps.
  3. Record the difference between the zero end of the tape and the remaining tape.

After measuring your wrist size and height, you can calculate your body frame size index by using a simple formula:

Body frame size = Height / Wrist circumference

Where both wrist circumference and height are given in inches.

You can check which category your body frame index fits in using the separate tables for men and women below.

Is there an ideal weight and body frame size?

There is no accurate way to define ideal weight or body frame size since everyone's body composition is different. For instance, highly muscular individuals may have a high body mass index since muscle is denser than fat and takes up less space. However, a muscular body does not pose a health risk.

Is body frame size related to BMI?

Body frame size is often consistent with BMI. However, keep in mind that even if your BMI falls within a normal range and you have high body fat levels, you may still be at risk of developing diseases like type 2 diabetes, artery disease, heart disease, and some cancers.

What's my body frame size if I am 6 feet tall and have a wrist circumference of 5.5 inches?

To know your body frame size, you should:

  1. Convert your height into inches; 6 feet is 72 inches.
  2. Divide your height measurement in inches by your wrist circumference measurement; the result should be 13.
  3. That's all! A body frame size index of 13, in men and women, indicates a small body frame.
