Use our hexadecimal converter to convert numbers from decimal and binary forms to hexadecimal, and vice versa. If you’re not familiar with the hexadecimal system yet, don’t worry — this article explains the basics and shows you how to perform the conversions step by step.

At the end of the text, you’ll also find links to sources where you can learn more about the conversion methods we used in the hexadecimal calculator.

🙋 Be sure to check out our ASCII converter as well. It allows you to convert hexadecimal values into ASCII text, making it easy to read the resulting characters.

What is the hexadecimal system?

The hexadecimal system, also called hex, represents numbers using 16 symbols. It starts with the familiar digits from 0 to 9 and then continues with six letters: A, B, C, D, E, and F. In this system, A stands for 10, B for 11, and so on, with F representing 15.

This way of writing numbers is especially useful in computing. A single hexadecimal digit can represent four binary digits, which makes long strings of 0s and 1s much easier to read. For example, the binary value 10101100 can be shortened to AC in hexadecimal.

When you see a hexadecimal value in programming code, it may be marked with 0x before the value. For example, the decimal value 255 can be written as 0xFF. Hexadecimal numbers are also sometimes written with a subscript 16, as in FF₁₆. Our converter displays hexadecimal values without these prefixes or subscripts.

How to use the hexadecimal converter

Our hex calculator allows you to quickly convert between the three number systems. To use the converter:

  1. Choose the conversion you need and find the corresponding section:
    • Decimal to hexadecimal;
    • Binary to hexadecimal; or
    • Hexadecimal to decimal/binary.
  2. Enter the number you want to convert.
  3. The hexadecimal calculator will display the original number and its converted value.

That’s it! You can enter another number or switch to a different converter whenever you need.

How does the hex calculator work?

Converting between hexadecimal, decimal, and binary is based on well-established mathematical procedures. We’ve built these calculations into the tool so you can get the results quickly and easily. If you’d like to learn how the conversions work, check out the following tools:

  • Decimal to hexadecimal converter — learn how to convert a decimal number to hexadecimal by repeatedly dividing it by 16 and recording the remainders. To convert hexadecimal to decimal, construct the decimal number by multiplying the intermediate result by 16 and adding the next hexadecimal digit. Sounds complicated? You can find more details in the link above.

  • Binary to hexadecimal converter — learn how to convert between binary and hexadecimal by grouping binary digits into sets of four and matching them to hexadecimal digits. This is much simpler than the decimal ⇔ hexadecimal conversion, as long as you already know the binary system.

💡 If you want to learn more about the binary number system, check out our binary converter. It explains how the binary system works and helps you perform calculations using binary numbers.
