ASCII Converter
Converting ASCII elements is fundamental to understanding how character encoding works, as ASCII is the basis for modern and widely used standards, such as the Unicode encodings, an extension of the ASCII character set (you may want to know and ). To help you achieve that, this ASCII code translator enables you to perform various conversions, including hex to ASCII text, binary to text, and others.
But this journey doesn't stop here! Apart from this converter, you can explore more specific tools, such as the decimal to hexadecimal converter, binary to hexadecimal converter, or the binary converter. Still confused? You probably need to start by learning 😄.
Below, you'll find the ASCII charts, which provide a comprehensive overview of the ASCII hex, binary, decimal, and text equivalences; you'll find out there are!
Charts for ASCII characters
The ASCII characters are composed of 32 unprintable control codes and 96 printable characters. In addition, you'll sometimes find something called "Extended ASCII", which is a standard containing ASCII characters plus a set of 128 additional characters (see the article for more). You can check all of them in the charts below.

How to use this ASCII converter
- Look at what you want to convert. Is it a visible ASCII string, a hexadecimal, binary, or decimal number? Select the corresponding option from the "Input type" list.
- Now, input the data you want to convert in the "Input" field.
- Optionally, you can define the separator you want for your output results. By default, it's a space, but you can use commas, semicolons, or whatever suits your needs.
Finally, your result will be ready!
FAQs
How do I convert ASCII?
"Converting ASCII" typically consists of switching between a character (e.g., the letter "a", the symbol "%", or the number "2432") and an equivalent value represented by numbers (in the decimal, hexadecimal, or binary representation). This process is known as "character encoding."
We can do this in two ways:
- Manually, using mathematical rules to convert between hex, dec, and binary, then using a table to convert any of them to ASCII characters; or
- Using an ASCII code translator such as our Omni ASCII converter.
How do I convert from hex to its ASCII string?
To convert hexadecimal to ASCII text:
- Identify the hexadecimal numbers: hex numbers have two characters, so if, for example, the given hex number is 48656C6C6F, that means there are five hex numbers (48, 65, 6C, 6C, and 6F).
- Convert each hexadecimal number to a decimal number.
- Once you know the decimal numbers, find their equivalent character using a decimal-to-ASCII chart or an online converter.
How many ASCII characters are there?
There are 128 characters in the original ASCII and 256 characters in the extended ASCII standard. Keep in mind that the first 32 characters correspond to unprintable control codes used to administer peripherals such as printers.
What is the ASCII value of a?
For the lowercase letter "a", the ASCII values are (in various formats):
- Binary:
01100001 - Octal:
141 - Hexadecimal:
61 - Decimal:
97 - HTML number:
