You’ve probably heard all the hype and doom around AI recently. It will replace every job, solve every problem, or it’s a bubble about to pop and cause the next financial crisis. Maybe you’ve used a chatbot and been impressed, or asked one a simple math question and watched it confidently give you the wrong answer. Either way, we’re not here to tell you AI is good or evil — just what it has to do with us, Omni Calculator.

Here’s where we stand.

First, our calculators don’t guess — they calculate. We actually ran our own study (the ORCA benchmark) to see how well today’s frontier AI models handle basic calculations. Spoiler: not great. LLMs such as ChatGPT and Gemini are language prediction machines that synthesize vast quantities of information to reason and generate text. But that’s a terrible way to compute your mortgage payment or your BMI. So every calculator on our site runs on a deterministic math engine that we built and control. There are no hallucinations or different answers for the same input, just mathematically correct and consistent results.

Real humans write our explanations. Behind every calculator is a person — often with a PhD, sometimes a working scientist, always someone who actually understands the topic — who wrote the article explaining it. They research it, they fact-check it, and they know why the formula works. An AI scraping the internet and repackaging it in confident prose is not the same thing. Nothing goes on our site without a human setting eyes on it first.

Omni Calculator predates modern AI by 8 years. If you use the Internet Wayback Machine and look at our site one day before OpenAI first released the preview of their chatbot, you’ll see we had already created just over 3,000 calculators and texts. None of this vast content library could have been created with an LLM. Our calculator creation processes have remained unchanged, and we are now nearing 4,000 calculators.

We do use AI — just not where it matters most. We’re not Luddites when it comes to AI (we are a tech company after all). Our new Calculator Builder tool uses an LLM to turn your prompt into a working calculator, but you get to see the actual variables and formulas behind it and change anything you like — no black boxes here. The calculator that’s produced uses the same flexible math engine and unit switcher magic as any other Omni calculator, ensuring consistent and accurate results.

We use AI to draft translations of our articles, but a native-speaking subject expert reviews and fixes every single one before it goes live. We’ve used it for rapid prototyping (our mobile app was “vibe-coded” in about a month before our developers rebuilt it properly), and for speeding up internal work like slide decks — always labeled as AI-assisted so nobody’s confused about what they’re looking at.

But the stuff that actually matters to you? That’s all us. The calculation engine. The informative calculator texts. The website design and features that improve user experience. The processes that ensure the security of your data. Those are built and reviewed by our own qualified team, not outsourced to a language model.

Use AI tools if you wish. We do too, but only in the right places. When it comes to the actual math and calculator explanations, that’s us, not a chatbot.
