What is EUI?

Energy use intensity (EUI) is a metric that measures the energy efficiency of a building. It is calculated by dividing the total energy consumption of a building by its total floor area. EUI is typically expressed in units of energy per square foot or square meter per year.

The purpose of EUI is to provide a standardized way of comparing the energy efficiency of buildings of different sizes and types. By comparing the EUI of different buildings, it is possible to identify opportunities for energy savings and prioritize energy efficiency improvements.

A lower EUI indicates a more energy-efficient building, while a higher EUI indicates a less energy-efficient building. EUI can be used by building owners, facility managers, and energy auditors to track the energy performance of buildings over time and to identify areas where energy efficiency improvements can be made.

How to calculate EUI?

To calculate energy use intensity (EUI), let’s take the following building as an example:

  • Location: California, USA
  • Total annual energy consumption: 200,000 kBtu
  • Total floor area: 10,000 ft2

You can calculate the EUI in 3 steps:

  1. Calculate the total annual energy consumption of the building.

    The first step is to compute the annual energy consumption of a building. For our example, the building consumes 200,000 kBtu per year.

  2. Determine the total floor area of a building.

    Next, you will need to determine the total floor area of the building. In this example, the building has a floor area of 10,000 ft². You can use our area calculator to speed up the calculation.

  3. Calculate the energy use intensity (EUI).

    The final step is to calculate the energy use intensity using the EUI formula:

    EUI = total annual energy consumption / total floor area

    Thus, the EUI for this building is 200,000 kBtu / 10,000 ft² = 20 kBtu per ft2 per year.
